5 Ways to Make a Room Feel Cohesive With your Entire House

Arden Interiors Home Decor Design Tips How to Make A House Feel Cohesive

The number one question people ask me?

“How do I make my house feel cohesive?” // “How do I design a room to feel cohesive with the rest the house?”

Read below to learn more about my top recommendations on how to decorate your house so it feels like home, including mixed metals, colors, and more.

  1. COORDINATE COLORS
One of the easiest ways to achieve a cohesive home is by using the same (or very similar) colors throughout in decor, accent pieces, paint, etc.

I love to mix it up, like using taupe throw pillows in the living room that coordinate with a taupe throw blanket in the bedroom and taupe accent paint in the bathroom.

There are endless combinations like this, so consider an overall theme for your home, then apply it to individual rooms one at a time.

  2. USE SIMILAR TEXTURES & MATERIALS
Another tip from a pro: Choosing the same materials to repeat throughout your home in varying ways.

Just like with color, choosing favorite materials for your home (like linen, boucle, or leather) and repeating them in different ways can make your home feel instantly cohesive.

Think: Pillows, blankets, furniture, rugs, etc.

  3. RUGS
Rugs can be the perfect way to make a house feel like a finished home, and when you are able to make every room feel as though it's a different part of the same collection? Even better.

When selecting options for rugs throughout your home, consider the same style (e.g. Persian or Turkish), materials (like jute), or colors (like neutrals or grays).

  4. COORDINATE METAL ACCENTS
Mixing metals is one of my favorite things to do in a space. When decorating a room, I usually opt for two, like brushed gold and matte black, for example.

Repeat these same accents throughout your home - in fixtures, decor, hardware, and more. You'll be surprised by how quickly this makes your home feel pulled together.

  5. STICK TO ONE THEME
Saving the most important one for last: stick to one decorating theme in your home.

When you walk into a house and the kitchen is mid-century modern, the bathroom is modern farmhouse, and the bedroom is neutral and minimalist, it makes every room feel as though it's a part of somewhere different - not like one house belonging to one person.

In order to make every room feel cohesive, stick to one theme. But don't be afraid to make it your own! Just remember to follow the plan in every room you decorate.
